The Vampire Diaries is based on a series of books written by Smith in which they provide insight into the diary 17 years Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). Elena and her brother 15 years, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), who lives with Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning).
